Get an Extension to File Your Taxes
Extended Deadline for Taxpayers
Extension Request Deadline
If you need more time to file your taxes, you must file an extension request no later than the regular due date of your return. This year, the tax filing deadline is April 18, 2023. You must file your extension request by this date, even if you live in a disaster area or have other circumstances that make it difficult to file on time.
Extension Form
To request an extension, use Form 8809, Application for Extension of Time to File Information Returns. You can download the form from the IRS website or request a paper copy by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
Extended Deadline
An extension gives you until October 16, 2023, to file your tax return. However, it does not give you an extension to pay any taxes you may owe. If you owe taxes, you must still make an estimated payment by April 18, 2023, to avoid penalties. You can use Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals, to make an estimated payment.
