Prince Edwin’s New Bills to Tackle Urgent Care Physician Shortage

The Palace Released a Statement Addressing the Situation

Part Two: Press and Palace

On September 23, 2022, the Senate passed three bills sponsored by Senator Prince Edwin aimed at resolving the shortage of primary care physicians in the state. SB 286, SB 287, and SB 288 will increase funding for medical education, provide incentives for physicians to practice in rural areas, and establish a loan forgiveness program for medical students who commit to practicing primary care.

The bills were praised by medical associations and patient advocacy groups. The California Medical Association called the bills "a major step forward in addressing the critical shortage of primary care physicians in California." The California Health Care Foundation said the bills "will help ensure that all Californians have access to the high-quality health care they deserve."

However, the bills have also drawn criticism from some quarters. The California Hospital Association said the bills "will increase the cost of health care without addressing the underlying causes of the physician shortage." The California Taxpayers Association said the bills "are an expensive and ineffective way to address the physician shortage."

In a statement, the Palace said that Prince Edwin "is committed to working with all stakeholders to address the shortage of primary care physicians in California." The statement said that the Prince "believes that these bills are a good first step toward solving this important problem."
